About us
We arrived with the town
El Chaltén was founded in 1985. That year Alberto del Castillo arrived, and ten years later we started guiding. This is the story of the place, and ours.
The place
Antes
Chaltén
The Tehuelche called it Chaltén, the mountain that nearly always has a cloud stuck to its summit: the smoking mountain.
1877
Fitz Roy
Francisco P. Moreno names it Fitz Roy, after the captain of the Beagle. Both names are still in use.
1937
The National Park
Los Glaciares National Park is created; today it protects the massif, the ice field and the lakes.
1952
The first summit
Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone reach the summit of Fitz Roy for the first time. The street our office is on bears Terray’s name.
1981
World Heritage
UNESCO declares Los Glaciares National Park a World Heritage Site.
1985
El Chaltén is born
The town is founded at the foot of the massif. That same year Alberto del Castillo arrives.
Us
1985
Alberto
Alberto del Castillo arrives in a town that is just starting. A mountain guide, he has known these valleys since before the trails were marked.

1995
Fitz Roy Expediciones
The company is born: guided treks to Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, and the first multi-day crossings.
Lago Argentino
Estancia Cristina
Alberto chairs Estancia Cristina, on the north arm of Lago Argentino. That is why two of our crossings end there: you arrive on foot and they take you in.

Hoy
Josefina del Castillo
Today the company is run by Josefina del Castillo. We still head out almost every day, with groups of up to 8 and guides who live in town.
