The trek

Five days from the Río Guanaco valley, over Paso Sombrero, to arrive at Estancia Cristina on foot.

Open valleys, Paso Sombrero, high lakes and a final arrival at the estancia on foot. For people who want the Patagonia beyond the known trails.

There are no huts: we sleep in tents and the route follows each day’s weather.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Into the Guanaco valley

    1 km+20 m↑ 600 m⌂ Riverside camp

    We start at Seccional Guanaco, on the east side of the park. We cross a small suspension bridge and set the first camp by the river, among lenga and ñire trees.

  2. Day 2

    Guanaco valley → Paso Sombrero camp

    14 km6–7 h+650 m−50 m↑ 1,200 m⌂ Paso Sombrero

    Grassland, wetlands and forest until the land turns alpine and the walls around Cerro Sombrero fill the horizon. We camp below the first pass. Weather permitting, a short walk to the Laguna Azul viewpoints.

  3. Day 3

    Crossing Paso Sombrero

    13 km+350 m−650 m↑ 1,500 m⌂ Camp de los Toros

    The most spectacular stage. From the pass the Southern Ice Field appears, with Murallón, Cono and Don Bosco rising over the ice. We descend towards Lago Tannhauser to Camp de los Toros, in a lenga forest by a stream.

  4. Day 4

    Camp de los Toros → Estancia Cristina

    8 km3–4 h+100 m−400 m↑ 900 m⌂ Estancia Cristina lodge

    An easier walk through native forest to Estancia Cristina on Lago Argentino. Depending on logistics, the arrival can also be on horseback.

  5. Day 5

    Upsala Glacier and Fossil Canyon

    14 km4–5 h+250 m−700 m↑ 900 m⌂ 4×4 and boat

    A 4×4 climbs into the Feruglio range and we walk to viewpoints over Upsala Glacier, Lago Guillermo and the ice field. We descend through Fossil Canyon and return by boat across Lago Argentino.
