The trek

The circuit around Cerro Huemul in four days, beside the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

We cross Paso del Viento and Paso Huemul with the ice field on one side and Viedma Glacier below. Groups of 4 to 6 with local guides.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    El Chaltén → Laguna Toro

    16 km6–7 h+550 m⌂ Laguna Toro

    We leave town through quiet valleys under Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre and enter the lenga forest that leads to Laguna Toro. We camp by the lake.

  2. Day 2

    Laguna Toro → Paso del Viento

    10 km5–6 h+600 m⌂ Paso del Viento camp

    We cross the Río Túnel (by Tyrolean traverse, depending on the river) and climb to Paso del Viento, where the Southern Patagonian Ice Field opens up. We descend to camp among glaciers.

  3. Day 3

    Paso del Viento → Paso Huemul → Bahía Témpanos

    9 km6–7 h+600 m⌂ Bahía Témpanos

    We go around Cerro Huemul through alpine meadows and rocky ridges, with Viedma Glacier below. From Paso Huemul begins the long descent to Bahía Témpanos, our last night by Lago Viedma.

  4. Day 4

    Viedma Glacier by boat → Bahía Túnel → El Chaltén

    5 km⌂ Boat and transfer

    A short walk along the shore and we board: from the water we approach the front of Viedma Glacier. We land at Bahía Túnel and drive back to town.

Do you need to register for the Huemul Circuit?

Yes: it is a remote area and registering with the Park is mandatory. Before the trek we tell you how to do it.

What does Fitz Roy Expediciones carry and what do I bring?

We provide the tents, food, stoves and radio. You bring your personal technical gear; we send you the list when you book.

How many days is it?

Four days, beside the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Viedma Glacier.

  2. 02Meeting point and timeThey come with the confirmation. Depending on the trek, we meet in town or pick you up.
  3. 03What to bringWe send you the list: hiking boots with good grip, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, water and food.
  4. 04If the weather says noThe guide decides. If we cannot go, we move you to the next date or give you credit for another trek.
  5. 05If you need to cancel30 days or more before: full refund; 15 to 29 days: 50%; under 15 days: no refund.
