The trek

We leave El Chaltén at night and hike by headlamp to reach the lake as the first light hits Fitz Roy.

The departure time is confirmed according to that day’s sunrise and the pace needed to reach Laguna de los Tres before first light.

At the top we take our time: a hot drink, a rest and the massif changing colour. Then we walk back down to town.

Groups of up to eight with a local guide. The sunrise view depends on the weather and cannot be guaranteed.

How the day goes

  1. Night departure from El Chaltén
  2. Climb by headlamp
  3. First light at Laguna de los Tres
  4. Hot drink and a rest at the top
  5. Back down to El Chaltén

Wind on the way

It is the first thing we check in the morning. Town can be calm while the lake is blowing hard, so we show both heights.

Laguna de los Tres Sunrise Trek: questions

What time do we leave?

At night, around 00:30. The final time is set by that day’s sunrise, to reach the lake before first light.

Is the sunrise view guaranteed?

No: it depends on the weather. That is why we watch the forecast closely before confirming.

What should I bring?

The same as for Laguna de los Tres, plus a headlamp and more warm layers: it is very cold up there at night and at dawn.
